The plastic things on the end of shoelaces are called aglets.

An aglet or aiglet is the plastic or metal sheath found on each end of a shoelace. An aglet keeps the fibers of the lace from unraveling. It also helps in easily holding laces and makes it easier to feed through the eyelets or other lacing guides.
The word aglet (or aiglet) comes from Old French aguillette, which is the diminutive of aguille, meaning "needle". This in turn comes from acus, a Latin word for a needle. An aglet is thus like a small needle at the end of a cord. |
