In Linux we have GIMP tool for designing. It is similar to Adope Photoshop.
Plus points of GIMP.
Free
Faster (than CS3 at least)
Easier for New Learners
Extremely powerful, if you can learn in depth.
Customisable Keyboard Shortcuts(Big Advantage)
Customisable User Interface (Icons, buttons, tools etc.)
Minus points of GIMP.
Layer Effects are less flexible than PhotoShop
Alternative to Actions(Automating Tasks) is 'Scripting', which is almost a Programmer's job.
No Inbuilt Batch Processing
Difficult for existing Photoshop users to switch to GIMP
Currently a bit less perfect for high quality commercial printing(No CMYK, 8bitRGB)
