“80 million tonnes of coal to be imported”

NEYVELI: It has been proposed to import 80 million tonnes of coal to meet the supply-demand gap during the terminal year of the 11th Five-Year Plan, according to Sriprakash Jaiswal, Union Minister of State (Independent charge) for Coal, Statistics and Programme Implementation.
Mr. Jaiswal was addressing a press conference on the Neyveli Lignite Corporation campus here on Tuesday.
No move to acquire
coal blocks
In reply to a question regarding the proposal to form Neyveli Videsh Nigam Ltd to acquire coal blocks in Indonesia and South Africa, the Minister said it was not under the immediate consideration of the Centre.
Hailing the performance of the NLC, Mr. Jaiswal said that during 2009-2010 the NLC exceeded the target in terms of lignite production (223.38 lakh tonnes) and electricity generation (17,657.94 million units) were the highest since its inception.
