Women feel pain more than men

It has been confirmed-women feel pain more strongly than men.

A Canadian pain expert has said that there is now scientific consensus that despite what is generally believed, women are more sensitive to pain than men.

Professor Jeffrey Mogil said that most people thought women were built to feel less pain to help them during childbirth, but women tested as being more sensitive to all types of pain.

About 70 per cent of chronic-pain patients worldwide were women, he said.

"The only bright spot is that there's also sex differences in the ability to cope with pain, and women are a little better at that.

They have more coping mechanisms than men do," Stuff.co.nz quoted im as saying

Mogil said that research showed that men and women had different circuits in the brain for processing pain.

This discovery could lead to painkillers being developed that could work for only men or only women.

Mogil presented the findings at the annual scientific meeting of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and its Faculty of Pain Medicine in Christchurch.
