Colour your hair with care

If your hair have grey streaks that don't complement your personality, age or style, the oh-so expensive salon visits are an imperative. But what if you can colour your hair at home? Experts share dos and don'ts of doing this messy job on your own.

Like a pro "There are some quick and easy instructions that are mentioned on the pack. If you are following them thoroughly, it's okay to colour your hair on your own, as these are self-use products," says hair expert Jojo. One may follow the instructions and get the act (of colouring hair) right but Rod Anker of Kimrobinson salon, still won't suggest it.

"Whether it's normal colouring of hair or highlighting and streaking, it is incredibly hard to get the natural look when doing it at home. One may end up applying colour on areas that do not even need it and that can prove harmful," he says.

"Plus, giving five different shades of colour apt for your skin shade and have that multi-shade effect is a difficult thing to do." Take note: Always do the skin allergy test before applying the product.

If your hair needs shampooing, do so before applying the hair colour. After keeping the colour for the required amount of time, rinse it off with water and then condition it.

Shampoo only after 48 hours, not before. Always use a colour-friendly shampoo; these help retain the colour longer and are mild.

Turn your head over so that you do not stain your skin. In case there is contact, wipe it off immediately, as the black/brown/burgundy patch will look terrible later.
