MySpace + Facebook = Mashup
MySpace Launches ‘Mashup’ With the Help of Facebook
Social networking addicts can now create entertainment-focused streams on their MySpace pages by importing their Facebook “likes”, thanks to the new “Mashup” feature from MySpace.
MySpace CEO Mike Jones and Facebook VP of Partnerships and Platform Marketing Dan Rose.
With the integration, MySpace has just confirmed that it is more like an entertainment space than a social networking site. But that admission, MySpace is able to utilize the millions of Facebook users worldwide and at the same time allow their own users to enjoy Facebook, without really crossing the line.
The feature works just like all the other buttons used for Facebook Connect, but geared towards the content library of MySpace.
“Myspace is very committed to this new strategy of social entertainment,” said Jones. “We feel that this is a complimentary offering to Facebook and other social platforms.”
“This is a great example of Myspace’s new direction, which is very focused on entertainment, and obviously Facebook’s very focused on building a social platform,” said Rose.
Facebook users who like “Green Lantern” can now get more content updates about “Green lantern”, using MySpace. The feature is very convenient to use as it only requires one click to import a Facebook user’s “likes”, to be able to see more content stream in their MySpace account.
For example, Facebook users who “like” Emma Watson will automatically be linked to Watson’s topic page when they use MySpace Mashup.
This is a last ditch attempt of MySpace to remain relevant in the social networking era, and to counter Apple’s Ping.
“We’ve been clear: MySpace is a problem,” News Corp. deputy chairman Chase Carey told investors during a conference call earlier this month. “Current losses are not acceptable or sustainable.” He said the relaunch of MySpace is good, but admitted they have to create a “clear path to profitability” of MySpace in the months ahead.
