The Old English adjective fast meant fast, firm, strong. The adverb faste meant fast, firmly, vigorously. They are related to Old High German festi, firm. Modern German for firm, solid, is fest.
To fast by abstaining from food, in Old English, was faestnian, related to Old High German fasten, to fast, and the same word is used in modern German.
