Scottish bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming noticed a bacteria-killing mold growing in a dish in his laboratory. The mold later became known as penicillin, which was developed into an antibiotic. More than 15 years later, in 1942, penicillin was first successfully used to treat a patient in Connecticut.
